The Leonora Primary School was duly recognised when the Region Three Department of Education held its 12th annual Awards Ceremony at the West Demerara Secondary School yesterday.
The event, which came as part of the observance of Education Month, saw nine students of the primary school, who recently participated in the National Grade Six Assessment, being awarded trophies and certificates for their outstanding achievements at the regional level.
Among the awardees that were drawn from the school were Sharmilla Ramlall who scored 548 points, Rafena Mustapha with 545 points, Get Ye Lo Kong and Akeisha Archer who both secured 539 points, Ron Chetram, Shane Rampertab and Parmeshwarie Deodat who all gained 536 marks, while Sarah Mohamed and Shameer Khan secured 535 and 534 respectively.
Other top Grade Six assessment performers of the region were Sasha Singh of the Saraswat Primary School, who gained 535 points, and Areefa Richardson of Meten-Meer-Zorg Primary, who secured 534 points.
Awards were also presented to the top students of other areas in the region. There was Nicholas Ragnauth of La Harmony, Kemol Seeraj of Zeelandia, Upper Essequibo; Guy Lobert of Saxacally, Lower Essequibo; and Mohamed Hassan of Kawall Primary, West Bank Demerara.
Top performers at the Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate (CSEC) were also similarly awarded, as were those students who performed well at the impromptu speech competitions and the National Spelling Bee Champion, Liza John, of the Leonora Primary School.
However, the outstanding performance of students only constituted one segment of the event, which also highlighted the achievement of some teachers in the region.
Among the highlighted teachers were those who are up for retirement, as well as those who have offered many years of service. They were all awarded for their commitment to the education sector.
Teachers who performed well at the Cyril Potter College of Education examinations were also duly recognised and awarded.
Commending the diligence the teachers displayed over the years, Assistant Chief Education Officer Secondary, Ms Melcita Bovell pointed out that the teachers have been able to “weather the storm,” adding that their selfless commitment has served to improve communities and, by extension, the country.
“You have been building a nation, so that Guyana could have a literate and numerate society,” Bovell asserted.
And in keeping with the theme of Education Month – Education of the child: a parent and teacher obligation – Ms Bovell said that the Ministry of Education will continue to support parents who ensure that their children are able to cope academically.
The awards ceremony was regarded as a significant undertaking by Regional Education Officer Ms Marlyn Jones-O’Donoghue.
Ms O’Donogue pointed out the importance of honouring outstanding performances, even as she emphasised that a sound education is an invaluable ingredient for life, thus it should not be taken lightly.
The Education Officer related that the Department of Education will continue to support the Education Ministry’s enhancement programmes.
She urged the student awardees to utilise their education wisely, a notion which was reiterated by Regional Chairman Julius Faerber.
According to Faerber, while it is important for the awardees to delight in their achievement, they must also maintain their outstanding standard in order to inspire others to follow suit.
He disclosed, too, that the Government has put in place things, such as scholarships programmes, through which students could further their education.
However, Faerber pointed out, the onus still remains on both teachers and parents to work along with those students who are not academically inclined.
