– robs camp, rapes women
A group of mostly Brazilians miners are appealing for help from the Joint Services after many of them were held at the mercy of a gang of heavily armed bandits in the Arangai, Cuyuni area.
Miners in the area said that they were forced to flee their camp while the gang, which numbered about eight men, continued to raid the area over a four-day period.
According to the miners, the men have been robbing camps of their gold, diamond, food and other valuables.
These gunmen, who are said to be armed to the teeth with machine guns and small guns, have also reportedly raped several women in the area.
Reports stated that all of the bandits spoke English, but the miners believe that they originated from neighbouring Venezuela.
“Nobody knows where they are coming from or where they go when they leave, but we think that they are hiding out in Venezuela,” a source close to the Brazilian miners told this newspaper.
One Brazilian miner told this newspaper that he fled the area after seeing what was happening at the other camps in the area.
He said that he is certain that he will not return to the area as long as there continues to be no police or military presence in the area.
This newspaper understands that Arangai is a large mining area which extends towards the Venezuela border. There are hotels, restaurants and large shops, but no police presence.
The miners described the bandits as very vicious and brutal. “Everything they could take they were taking, even the women,” the source said.
This newspaper was informed that, during one of the attacks, a female waitress was brutally gang-raped in the presence of her employer.
“Even the Guyanese are being robbed,” the source said.
Police at Bartica, where most of the Brazilian miners usually stop in-transit from their various mining areas, told this newspaper that they have received no reports of the incidents but will be monitoring, the situation with the assistance of ranks from the city.
