The mobile telecommunications provider Digicel continued its celebration of Amerindian Heritage Month with a presentation of $200,000 in trophies to the Mabaruma Heritage Committee.
These trophies will be awarded to winners of the various competitions scheduled for the second annual Mabaruma Heritage celebrations. Two days have been dedicated to the preservation of the region’s rich cultural heritage.
The sports day is being held today and tomorrow; and on Sunday, October 7, young ladies will take to the stage for the Miss Mabaruma Amerindian Heritage Pageant.
Digicel Sponsorship Executive Shirwin Campbell has said that Digicel is very happy to be involved in the Mabaruma Heritage celebrations and has always shown its support for the preservation of Guyana’s culture.
He said that the company will continue to do so, since it holds Mabaruma close to it heart, the settlement being one of the first remote communities in which Digicel had set up service since coming to Guyana.
The trophies will go to winners of the male and female categories in the canoe and speedboat racing, swimming, archery, cassava grating, local drinking, cricket, volleyball, football and tug-o-war competitions.
The winners of the Miss Mabaruma Amerindian Heritage Pageant will also receive trophies, compliments of Digicel.
Mabaruma Heritage Committee Secretary Leandra Singh has said that the committee is grateful for Digicel’s contribution. Singh added that it is great when corporate Guyana supports activities such as these.
She added that Amerindians believe it is necessary to promote their culture, and called on everyone to join Amerindians in having fun and celebrating their culture.
Digicel has supported a number of events in celebration of Amerindian Heritage Month 2008. The company has supported the Amerindian Heritage Sports Day and Lethem Sports Day, and has also joined residents of Santa Rosa last Saturday to celebrate Amerindian Heritage Month and to officially launch Digicel’s service in that area.
