Hundreds of children gathered at the Agricola Playground on Thursday last for a grand rally and exhibition held to commemorate Child Protection Week.
The event was a joint initiative between the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security and Every Child Guyana.
This year, Child Protection Week is being held under the theme “Every citizen a child protector”.
Thursday’s event was aimed at sensitizing the community on the importance of creating a safer environment for children, and to provide opportunities for a life free from violence and abuse.
On display at the exhibition were items from several organisations, including the Red Cross, the Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association, Help and Shelter, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport; and the Ministry of Human Services’ Probation Department, among others.
To begin the event, the children staged a march along the East Bank Demerara Public Road, beginning at the Eccles Bridge and ending at Agricola, where a formal gathering was held.
During the programme, adults were encouraged by the various speakers to create more child-friendly environments.
Speakers at the rally included Ann Greene, the Coordinator of the Child Protection Unit of the Ministry of Human Services, and elders from the Agricola community.
Ms Greene called on parents to spend more time with children, and always listen. She spoke about the importance of communicating with children, who are often silenced by adults.
She added that a child-friendly environment does not only mean a proper school, but a proper spiritual and social environment. Parents were further urged to be role models for their children.
Pastor Ivan John, of the Open Door Bible Way church at Agricola, reiterated the call made by the other speakers to treat every child with respect and kindness.
He further noted that his church will continue to play its part in mentoring the children of the community and ensure they feel a sense of security.
The call for a better environment was further reiterated by child speaker Nikita Kippins, of the Covent Garden Secondary School. The student called on adults to try and be more understanding of the social ills of society that children are forced to deal with.
She asked that parents not be angry about the mistakes children make, but in turn guide them through their difficult times.
Meanwhile, at the various booths which were on display, pamphlets on child abuse, trafficking in persons, and other social ills were made available to the students.
