Director of Sport Neil Kumar yesterday threw out a challenge to Sports Officer
Allister Munroe to organise a National Windball Competition next year.
Delivering the feature address at the launching of the National Sports Commission / Al Sport & Tour Promotions / Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Inter-Secondary Schools Male Windball Championship, which is being played at the National Gymnasium, after a two-year absence, Kumar called on the Organiser of the tournament to expand his reach beyond Georgetown and get into the rural areas.
“I am issuing a challenge to Munroe to organise a national competition that would include schools from other areas of the country and not only the traditional regions that usually participate in such competitions,” Kumar mentioned.
He added that once the challenge is accepted and acted upon, he would attempt to get the use of the National Stadium to hopefully play the two semi-finals and the final.
The Director disclosed that about two days ago top officials from the Ministries of Sport and Education met and formed a national committee to assist with the development of sports from the school level.
“We met and a co-ordinating committee was set up to put their energies and efforts together and come up with an effective plan to develop sports among our youths,” Kumar said.
He pointed to the constant cry of many that they were not doing enough to aid in the development of sports, especially at the junior level, but the Director refuted the claim giving as examples the many competitions that they help organise such as the Coca-Cola football tournament, schools cricket, basketball competitions and the other disciplines that are competed in at the Inter-Guianas Games.
Kumar advised that all students interested in participating in next year’s competition must have at least 75 per cent attendance at school and a healthy pass mark, cautioning that any player who fails to meet the criteria will only be allowed to participate in the event on the basis of a teacher’s testimony.
The participating schools assemble shortly after the feature address by Director of Sport Neil Kumar (centre) yesterday.
“We would like all our youths to become good citizens and I consider all of you as my children,” Kumar told the gathering that comprised eight schools.
He promised to make regular visits along with the Ministers of Sport and Education to ensure that the tournament maintain the high standards that was set by the organisers.
Meanwhile, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony donated a quantity of tee-shirts which was presented to the managers and Captains of the respective teams.
The teams that have so far registered include Covent Garden Secondary, David Rose, Lodge High, Central, Institute of Business Education (IBE), L’Aventure, GITC and Monar Educational Institute (MEI).
In results of matches played: IBE defeated GITC by 22 runs.
