Residents of the Amerindian Heritage Village of Santa Aratak benefited from the army’s Medical Corps, as part of the GDF’s involvement in the celebration of Amerindian Heritage Month.
Army Drs. Dean, Khan and Marcus conducted a medical outreach programme for the residents and visitors to Santa Aratak.
Several residents, many of them children, took the opportunity to meet with and be examined by the doctors, who provided dental examinations among other medical procedures.
Apart from the medical team’s visit, the GDF, continuing its long and traditional involvement in the success of Amerindian Heritage Day celebrations, deployed 60 soldiers under the leadership of Captain Vernon Burnette to Santa Aratak where this year’s celebrations were held.
The Army’s involvement in Amerindian Heritage Day celebrations was previously executed at Lethem, Morakabai, Moruca, Annai, and Mainstay, all communities where the celebrations have been held over the past six years.
Each year, the soldiers of Amerindian descent are afforded the opportunity to participate fully in the celebrations.
This year, the celebrations were slated for Santa Aratak and after meeting with the Toshao, Mr. Aubrey Samuels, the Army once again stepped up and delivered.
The soldiers were involved in several projects including cleaning and decorating the library and the high school, landscaping of the area in the village where the main cultural performances were to be performed, setting up and coordinating all operation of all the necessary electrical inputs, and clearing and cleaning of the Kamuni Creek from the village right up to its confluence with the Demerara River.
With at least three vessels at its disposal, the GDF also provided transportation for the Prime Minister and his delegation, a Ministry of Health medical team, as well as for many other persons who attended the grand celebrations.
