What is being described as a very fruitful meeting was held among the Ministry
of Culture, Youth and Sport, National Sports Commission, Ministry of Education and several National Sports Associations/Federations on September 23.
According to information released from the meeting, it was unanimously agreed to form a Coordinating Committee to further ensure that our youth and students benefit from such synergies.
Minister of Education, Mr. Shaik Baksh and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony expressed their unflinching support to work towards the further strengthening of well organized sports programmes in schools, communities and the country.
The Physical Education and Sport Coordinating Committee comprised of representatives from both Ministries and the National Sports Associations. The Committee will overlook all matters pertaining to Physical Education and Sport in schools.
The Minister of Education called for a planned programme of sport activities in schools and the identification of the focal points for the strengthening of the physical education and sport programme within the schools curriculum. He went on to call for all stakeholders to work together.
Dr. Frank Anthony stated that the way forward must include an established structure for schools and community sport programmes. He went on to speak about the role of a Management Committee to oversee the development of these programmes.
Both Ministers expressed strong views on the improvement and accountability of the Ministry of Education and Guyana Teachers Union School Athletics, Cycling and Swimming Championship.
Chairman of the meeting was Director of Sport, Neil Kumar who expressed his appreciation for the support of the two Ministers and the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Pulandar Kandhi.
President of the Guyana Swimming Association Mr. Walcott and the President of the Cycling Federation Mr. Hector Edwards also made significant contributions to the meeting. President and Secretary of the Chess Federation were also supportive.
The release informed that the meeting also took decisions to establish a calendar of events and to link the strategic action plan with the Sports Policy Development. All the Stakeholders are expected to fulfill their role with define responsibility.
