Causing death driver released on reduced bail

After being in police custody for at least three months, Marshal Cummings, of Dartmouth, Essequibo Coast, was able to secure bail in the sum of $260,000 when the original bail sum was reduced on Wednesday by Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty at the Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court.

He was previously placed on $350,000 bail by a magistrate in Georgetown when he appeared in court there, charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and another of driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to the police, on June 7, last, at around 16:15 hours, Cummings, a driver attached to the Guyana Revenue Authority, was proceeding north along the Hampton Court public road, in vehicle PJJ5407, when he swerved into the path of motorcyclist Arjoon Persaud who was heading in the opposite direction.

Both Arjoon and the pillion rider died after they were struck and hurled into the trench on the western side of the road.

Arjoon died instantly while the pillion rider died while receiving medical attention at the Suddie Public Hospital the said evening.

Both the motor cycle and the sports utility vehicle that Cummings drove were extensively damaged.
Counsel Alfred Bacchus, who is representing Cummings, in an application for bail, noted his client’s lengthy period of incarceration. He told the court that Cummings is a poor man and that he will attend his trial.

He also noted that Cummings had suffered while he was in custody for that lengthy period. The magistrate acquiesced and reduced bail.
