The Guyana Nurses’ Assoc. condemns the Wismar Hospital attack

DEAR EDITOR,
The Guyana Nurses’ Association would like to express our condemnation of the attack on our two colleagues in Linden. We believe that this incident sharply points to the moral, spiritual and social decay which has enveloped our society today.

Even a few short years ago, it would have been unthinkable for even the hardened criminal mind to contemplate such a despicable act to our nurses, our dedicated care givers in active duty.We have heard of some progress in the investigation.

However, we strongly urge the police and our Justice system in Guyana to ensure that the perpetrators face the full brunt of the law as this would send a clear signal that our society will not allow such shameless acts.

We, additionally, express our grave concern with respect to the scandalous working conditions which our nurses have over time been subjected to.

We hasten to remind the competent authority that the employer has a legal responsibility to establish and maintain a safe, healthy and secure environment for the employee.As an immediate action, we urge all authorities at institutions to review security arrangements for nurses.

We also urge our nursing colleagues all over the country to highlight and document their concerns with regards to safety so that we could work with all stakeholders to ensure immediate redress for these issues.

We also call for an immediate regime of rehabilitative care and support for our two nurses who have been the victims of this outrageous act.

The Guyana Nurses’ Association stands ready to provide assistance and support to all measures that will ensure a speedy resolution to this and other matters affecting our nurses in Region Ten and throughout Guyana.
