DEAR EDITOR,
Every Guyanese at home and abroad should share the concerns, so well expressed by Ms. Christbel Hughes (chairperson for Commemoration Committee for the 200th Anniversary of the abolition of the British Trade and Captive Africans) in her plea to help Haiti and Cuba, at their time of suffering.
On 10th September, 2008 at a press conference at City Hall, I announced the establishment of a process to collect items in kind or cash to help the citizens of Havana, Cuba, with whom we share a strong Sister City relationship. Letters of appeal have already been sent to several businesses and individuals.
We have received from one firm the undertaking to make available two containers to store goods offered.
I suppose this initiative was subordinated, or got lost, with the media concentrating on the dump site fire, the enquiry and EU/EPA saga.
Now that the dust is settling, perhaps this appeal will make the news. The experience, competence and verve of Ms. Hughes will be a very big boost to this effort. The lady will be contacted.
Other likeminded persons are welcome to come on board.Truly, l look forward to some set of persons to take charge of this project.
Hamilton Green,
JP, Mayor
