Guyana’s vast potential for agro-energy and the development of this sector were highlighted to a high-level Brazilian team that is currently visiting Guyana.
Several proposals for investment in this sector from the Brazilian private sector have been submitted to Guyana.
However, Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud cautioned, in his deliberation with the team, that sugar cane and not corn will be utilized for agro-energy in Guyana.
The Minister, during a meeting with the team, said that the lands earmarked are not currently under cultivation nor any area under rain forests will be utilized.
Guyana’s Agriculture Minister expressed particular interest of cooperation in the areas of forestry, fisheries, and other non-traditional sectors.
During a meeting with the team, which is headed by Ambassador Rudy Nogueira, Persaud indicated that he would like to see greater cooperation between the Research Institute of Brazil (EMBRAPA) and the National Agriculture Research Institute of Guyana, with particular emphasis placed on forging stronger ties with the branch located in Roraima.
The State of Roraima borders Region Nine and the soil types and other similarities can allow for better coordination with Guyana.
Initial discussions were also held to provide support in the management of Guyana’s Forestry resources via satellite technology.
Persaud highlighted to the Brazilian team Guyana’s potentials for aquaculture and requested greater bilateral cooperation and investment to further develop this sector.
Clementne Baena Soares, Director of the Department of South America-11 of the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations, said that a detailed report of the delegation’s visit will be prepared to identify possible areas of cooperation which will be advanced during Minister Persaud’s visit to Brazil.
Persaud is expected to visit Brazil for the bio-fuel conference in November where there will be discussions emanating from a Joint Communiqué for cooperation between Guyana and Brazil.
Meanwhile, discussion will continue with technical officers during the next few days as they will try to formulate concrete proposals for the areas of cooperation in aquaculture, forestry, agro-energy and cultivation of cashew nuts and soya beans.
The delegation from the Federative Republic of Brazil is headed by Ambassador Rudy Nogueira, Under Secretary-General for Cooperation and Trade Promotion.
