A 27-year-old Port Kaituma businessman was yesterday refused bail when he appeared in court before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on an attempted murder charge.
The accused, Roy Goodcharran, called ‘King’ is accused of wounding Samuel Atkinson with intent to murder him on Sunday September 21 at Port Kaituma, North West District.
To the charge he pleaded not guilty. He is being represented by defense counsel Gary Ramlochand who, in making a bail application, told the court the accused lives with his reputed wife and is expecting his first child some time soon. He added that his client had no previous conviction.
He told the court that given the fact that the matter has to be transferred to Matthew’s Ridge and that the police have difficulties transporting prisoners to that location, if granted bail his client will return for trial at his own expense.
However, police prosecutor Denise Griffith objected to bail and told the court that the Atkinson was still hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital’s High Dependency Unit in a critical condition.
She then asked for leave to return in two weeks’ time for report. Bail was refused and the matter will be called again on October 13.
An earlier report had stated that on Sunday last the accused and Atkinson were consuming alcohol and watching DVD movies when an argument started.
Reports are that Atkinson then armed himself with a cutlass and was about to attack the accused who withdrew a firearm from his waist and discharged two rounds in Atkinson’s direction, hitting him in the centre of his upper back.
