Persons who appeared to be public spirited stole the firearm of a city resident who was knocked unconscious as a result of a road accident.
Errol Cappell, a licensed firearm holder, awoke in the Georgetown Public Hospital hours after the accident only to find that his weapon was missing.
Cappell, 51, of 24 Joseph Pollydore and Victor Streets, Lodge, was involved in an accident at around 18:15 hours on Sunday on the Bagotstown Public Road, East Bank Demerara.
Kaieteur News understands that following the accident, Cappell was picked up in an unconscious condition by persons unknown and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
After regaining consciousness, Cappell realized that his .32 Taurus pistol with 14 matching rounds which were in his right side pants pocket was missing.
The matter was reported to the police who revisited the scene of the accident but the weapon was not found.
Meanwhile, police in Berbice have recovered another illegal firearm.
According to reports, the police, acting on information, went to the home of Martin Garnett, a labourer of 76 Grant 1780, Crabwood Creek, where a search was conducted.
During the search, the ranks found a .32 semi automatic pistol without serial number and one matching round in a basket in Garnett’s bedroom.
The search was conducted in the presence of Garnett’s 32-year-old daughter. Subsequent checks were made for Garnett but he has not yet been contacted.
