There are many plots of land in Kwebanna Village, Region One, which can be used for agricultural purposes but there are no trained personnel in the area to direct interested persons in the field.
Toshao for the village, Troy Peters, voiced his concerns about the agricultural sector in the village on Monday during the opening ceremony of the National Workshop on ‘Government of Guyana Policy Approaches in support of Community Forestry Enterprises’, at the Umana Yana.
Peters told the gathering that the community has large acreages of lands, from which lumber was harvested, that can now be used for agricultural purposes.
“We also need to be trained in food preservation in order to preserve the food we grow in our area,” Peters said.
At present, he said that the wood-dressing facility in the community is not operational because of the lack of fuel and material to operate it.
“With the help of the Guyana Forestry Commission, we have submitted a budget and a letter seeking grant from the Basic Need Trust Fund, to purchase material and fuel so that the facility would not become a ‘white elephant,’ Peters said.
Speaking with Kaieteur News about the concerns raised by Peters, Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud, said that there is a programme of active support by the Ministry and its agencies for communities in Region One. Kwebanna, he said, is also included in this programme.
The Ministry would also expand the ‘Grow More Food’ campaign to Kwebanna shortly, the Minister told Kaieteur News.
Addressing the issue of the need for material and fuel for the wood-dressing facility, the Minister said that the GFC will examine possible additional support based on the forestry group performance and other determinants.
“I am encouraged by the village captain’s interest in further development of his community,” Persaud said yesterday.
On Monday, a National Workshop was hosted to consult with Toshaos from various Amerindian communities about the policy approaches in support of Community Forestry Enterprises.
The workshop was aimed at enhancing and supporting Amerindian communities in their drive for more community-based forestry enterprises.
During the opening of the workshop, Toshao Peters, highlighted many of the problems affecting his community.
These included problems concerning infrastructural development, schools and social development within the community.
Peters also highlighted the fact that mining is conducted in the upper Waini River, causing pollution of the river water. Kwebanna Village is some 22 miles from Moruca, Region One.
