Thieves cart off vacationing businessman’s firearm, cash

Police on the West Coast Berbice are investigating the theft of a licenced firearm and a large quantity of cash from the home of businessman Nasrudeen Mohamed.

The discovery of the theft was made on Monday morning when the caretaker of the businessman’s property visited the building and found it broken into.

Mohamed and his family went on vacation overseas, leaving the articles in a safe with a caretaker looking after the home.

When the caretaker checked the property on Monday he discovered that the safe was wrenched open and the articles, which consisted of the firearm, a quantity of ammunition, $2.7M and a sum of foreign currency, were missing. The incident brings to the fore the proper storage of personal firearms, the police said.

A senior police official advised that the correct procedure should be for the weapon to be lodged at the nearest police station whenever the holder is leaving the country.

The officer pointed out that on many occasions, licenced firearm holders are in the habit of leaving their weapons at home whenever they are leaving the country.

“The safest thing to do is to leave it at the Timehri Police Station where they can uplift it as soon as they return to the country,” the officer advised. He warned that persons who lose their firearm in similar manner could have their licences revoked.

Meanwhile, police in the Ancient County, acting on information received, on Monday conducted a search on a home at Grant 1780, Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, and found an unlicensed .32 semi-automatic pistol with a matching round. The police did not say if anyone was arrested.
