DEAR EDITOR,
Kindly permit me the privilege of expressing my opinion on an issue with regard to the use of our National Stadium. I have never had the pleasure of visiting this national edifice since its construction, but I must register my satisfaction in us finally getting such a facility.
However, I am very disappointed over the fact that this facility is being under-used or misused by the powers that be.
Did we build a stadium to promote dance hall and reggae vibrations?
Why is this facility being used for such? Aren’t the National Park, the GFC and GCC fit anymore for such activities?
I would like to believe that the name of the stadium would be synonymous with the development of positive activities for our people. Do not get me wrong, I have nothing against dancehall and reggae concerts or music.
My concern is why has this facility become the main venue for such activities, when there are other very good venues for such?
For instance, why hasn’t any attempt been made to acquire a synthetic track at this stadium for our athletes, who will only be able to make us proud if given the right facilities to train with? I have just read that “local athletics coaches benefited from a clinic facilitated by the German Olympic Sports Confederation, [Kaieteur News, 21st September, 08].”
Can someone explain how these coaches will implement the requisite skill to our athletes? Or was the clinic specially adapted to our conditions, where our athletes are still competing locally on grass? We were all screaming for the Jamaican athletes who made the entire region proud during the Beijing Olympics.
However, the progress of these athletes was not surprising, since they are being provided with all the requisite facilities by their government.
Jamaica is a small CARICOM nation but can boast of having the fastest men and women in the world. What is even more startling is that they mostly train at home in Jamaica.
How can we boast of being a modern society when we do not have the proper facilities for our young people to become masters of their respective sports, particularly if they are not cricketers or soccer players?
Guyana may be a nation that is economically underdeveloped, but I am almost sure there are friendly nations and local entrepreneurs willing to assist us in acquiring a proper track and a few public sports facilities for our young people.
With the improvement of our athletics programme, there will not only be talent scouts visiting our country, but also major sponsors who are willing to expand the marketing of their particular brands. This will surely bring economic benefits to our country.
Finally, with the inauguration of the Caribbean Athletics Championships in Trinidad within the next two years, it’s an opportune time for our Government to seek the acquisition of a synthetic track, so that our athletes can have the chance of improving their techniques and at least make the qualifying times.
