Police Lance Corporal, Clement Bailey has been committed to stand trial in the High Court for the murder of West Ruimveldt barber, Clifton Garraway.
The committal order was made when Bailey appeared before Magistrate Nayasha Williams-Hatmin on Monday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Garraway was shot dead outside a popular night club on February 25 last year. He had been shot four times at close range with a .9mm pistol that was issued by the Guyana Police Force to Bailey.
Bailey had made his first court appearance before Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan back on March 6, 2007.
Garraway, the deceased, was reportedly attempting to enter the night spot, when he reportedly touched a female who was acquainted with the policeman.
The female in turn went to the police rank and informed him of what had happened. The accused allegedly went to the deceased, and an argument and scuffle started.
During the scuffle Bailey drew his pistol and shot Garraway four times about his body, mortally wounding him. After the man was shot, he slumped to the ground.
Friends of the dead man then tried desperately to get a vehicle to take the wounded man to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Persons at the scene said that the Lance Corporal had remained at the scene of the crime after the shooting.
