Guyana’s national champion Kristian Jeffrey, who has joined the Western Ontario University Squash team pursuing a degree in the Business Field, recently received the biggest surprise and boost to his young Squash career.
Kristian was contacted by the World Squash Federation and informed that he was awarded one of the WSF Invitee places in the qualification of the Hi-Tec World Open which commences in Manchester, England on October 11.
The Guyana Squash Association had nominated Jeffrey earlier in the year, and he was chosen out of a list of players from all over the world who were also nominated by their national associations.
An elated Jeffrey has already stepped up his training in Canada and has applied for time off from school to make the trip across to England. He is also working towards finding the funding to cover his airfare and accommodation while in Manchester.
The World Open is the pinnacle of professional squash and will surely be a spectacle that the young Guyanese will never forget. It is also a rare opportunity to observe and compete against the best players in the world, which should do wonders for his future development in the sport.
