Joel Small, 30, of 3550 Canal Place, South Ruimveldt Park, was yesterday remanded to prison for unlawful wounding when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. The accused, on September 18, allegedly maliciously wounded Nigel Dodson.
Small told the court that he came out of prison in January, and that Dodson who was living in the neighbourhood made threats to his life on two occasions.
He said that he made reports to the East La Penitence Police Station. Small further told the court that on the day in question Dodson passed by his house with others.
He admitted to the magistrate that he and the Dodson had a scuffle, and it was Dodson who was attempting to harm him. The defendant said that he managed to get the cutlass to defend himself.
But Dodson refuted this claim. He told the court that the defendant broke into his home and stole his children’s jewellery. The man said that the defendant is a well known thief in the area.
Dodson said that after the theft, he along with others attempted to weed the highly vegetated area by his house.
He said that while doing that he saw the defendant coming and he told him to say away from his home. He said that after the two had an exchange of words, the man bit him and when the cutlass dropped, he began chopping him about his body.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith opposed bail on the grounds that the accused does not have a fix place of abode, and got her wish. The matter is to reconvene on September 30 in Court Two.
