Andre Dharenpaul, of Lot 11 Coglan Dam, West Bank Demerara, allegedly stole one cell phone valued at $55,000 and $10,000 in cash from Newton Sylvie on September 20 last.
Yesterday he appeared in court represented by Attorney-at Law Mohamed Zafar, who told the court that his client works at the John Fernandes Wharf as a construction worker. The lawyer then asked that his client be granted bail in a reasonable sum.
Dharenpaul’s mother, who was present in the court, also announced that she was prepared to post surety to ensure that her son would return to court if he was placed on bail.
When Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle asked Sylvie if she had anything to say, she told the court that on the day in question they were all at a party and she left her bag to go to the washroom.
Upon her return, she said, she noticed that her money and cellular phone were gone. She said she then confronted the accused who had her phone in his hand but he refused to hand it over. The following day she said that she made a report to the police who arrested the accused; the phone was found in his bag.
Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews then told the court that that is indeed what transpired and that only $5000 was recovered. Matthews said the phone and the money were lodged at the Kitty Police Station.
The accused was then made to pay a court cost of $10,000 and he opted to pay back the money Sylvie. He was also placed on a bond to keep the peace for two years.
