…no pure water available at Kwebanna Village
It is a matter of great sacrifice for students living at the dormitory facility at Moruca, Region One, as three persons have to be sharing one bed at that institution.
Yesterday, Toshao Troy Peters, during his address to the National Workshop on ‘Government of Guyana Policy Approaches in support of Community Forestry Enterprises,’ at the Umana Yana, said that in the face of the overcrowding at the dormitory, some parents have sought the help of family and friends in the area to keep their children.
However, this arrangement puts the safety of students, especially females, at risk, he added. Peters, the Toshao for Kwebanna Village, yesterday said that in spite of the many achievements the community has made, there is more that can be done.
“We have teachers, but we do not have accommodation for them…In this modern time, we are sorry to say that some of our children have never had a chance to see a computer…We need computers in the schools within the community,” Peters said.
There is also need for another secondary school in the area to accommodate students from not only Kwebanna, but also from surrounding communities.
Peters added that due to the fact that mining is conducted in the upper Waini River, there is pollution of the river water. At the same time, he added, the two wells in the community are not functioning. There is urgent need for a pure water facility in the area.
The roads in the area, the Toshao said, need to be rebuilt, because of the deplorable state. Highlighting the plight of Amerindians, Peters said that because of the lack of communication, it takes at least a week to arrange one business agreement.
“We need nurses and Medex to be trained from our own community, since such people from other places do not feel comfortable working and living in such a remote area.”
Responding to the Toshao’s comments about the accommodation issue at Moruca, Minister within the Ministry of Education, Dr. Desrey Fox, told Kaieteur News that she was not aware of the problem.
If such is the case, she added, parents should attempt to deal with it at a regional level. Should this not bear any fruit, then it will be handled at a Central Government level, the minister said.
Addressing the call for another secondary school in the area, Fox noted that this is a general problem in interior locations, since one school has to be servicing several communities. Kwebanna Village is some 22 miles from Moruca, Region One.
