Doctors at the Georgetown Public Hospital are battling to save the life of 18-year-old Samuel Atkinson, of Fitzburg, Port Kaituma, who sustained a single gunshot wound to the back, discharged by a known gunman at a mining camp in Port Kaituma.
The incident occurred at some time around 11:30 on Saturday, and Atkinson was air dashed to the city on Sunday.
Late yesterday, the police announced that they had arrested a male suspect and recovered an unlicensed .38 revolver that is believed to have been used in the incident.
This newspaper was told that, on Saturday, Atkinson went to a mining camp, where he, the suspect and some other friends were consuming alcohol and watching DVD movies, when a loud argument was heard in the camp.
It turned out that Atkinson and the suspect had come to harsh words because Atkinson was reportedly interfering with the television.
Reports are that Atkinson armed himself with a cutlass and was about to attack the suspect, who withdrew a firearm from his waist and discharged two rounds in Atkinson’s direction, hitting him in the centre of his upper back.
Up to press time yesterday, Atkinson was still a patient of the Georgetown Public Hospital’s High Dependency Unit. Investigations are ongoing.
