The Guyana Police Force has accused dredge owner Leonard Arokium of withholding information from investigators who are probing the brutal slaying of eight employees of his mining camp almost two months ago.
The police, in a press release, stated that they are concerned about the attitude displayed by Arokium, who has been releasing information in a piecemeal manner through his lawyer and through the press.
The police say that they are also concerned that Arokium has not laid bare all the information that he has in relation to the matter under investigation.
“His actions seem designed to attract and maintain public sympathy,” the police statement said.
While police have provided evidence to support their theory that the miners were killed by now dead wanted man Rondell Rawlins and his gang, who were being pursued by the Joint Services at Christmas Falls, Berbice River, Arokium has maintained that the deaths of his employees, including his brother and son Dax, were the work of the security forces.
He has claimed that it is unreasonable to assume that Rawlins would take the time to kill his workers and then burn their bodies while he was being vigorously pursued by the security forces.
Arokium’s attorney has written to acting Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, saying that he had received credible and verifiable information that the mobile phone of one of the men killed at the camp continues to be in active use.
The police say that, while the acting Commissioner acknowledges that the letter was received, there was nothing to identify the number of the cell phone allegedly being used, in order that the matter can be followed-up.
The force says that it is calling on Arokium to present any other information he may have which could be of assistance in the investigation, and to reduce his acts of ‘grandstanding’.
According to the police, a previous letter from Arokium’s lawyer expressed concerns for his safety and requested a meeting with the acting Commissioner of Police.
The police say that the dredge owner’s lawyer was advised that the acting Commissioner was willing to see Arokium, but at no stage did Arokium turn up to provide any information in relation to his concerns for his safety, that is to say, persons allegedly stalking him.
The Criminal Investigations Department has been asked to pursue this recent information with Mr. Arokium. Recently, two prominent citizens have expressed their distrust for the police, following alleged reports that they are being targeted for execution.
Last week, veteran trade unionist Lincoln Lewis expressed similar sentiments about trusting the Guyana Police Force, following allegations that his home was visited by unknown characters, forcing him to flee to safety.
And, more recently, popular community activist Mark Benschop expressed similar sentiments after he claimed that he was informed that there was a price on his head.
He has reportedly provided the name of the person whom he said was paid to kill him during a meeting with the acting Police Commissioner last Saturday.
Benschop had declined to give further information to the local police, and has indicated that this information was passed on to security forces outside of Guyana.
Greene has since ordered an investigation into the allegations.
