Mark Smith, 34, of 2094 Nutmeg Street, Festival City, yesterday pleaded guilty to attempting to commit a felony, after he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.
Smith is accused of attempting to steal one shoulder bag, valued at $10,000, from Iris Thom, on September 20 last.
At the instigation of the acting Chief Magistrate, the woman said that Smith followed her as she was walking along Camp Street. Thom said that she turned around, and the defendant attempted to scramble her bag but she held on.
The woman said that she raised an alarm and a guard at a nearby company heard her cries.
The prosecution, which was headed by police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews, said that on the day of the attack, as Smith was attempting to relieve the woman of her bag, his hands were reaching into his pants.
Matthews said that Smith was caught by a mobile patrol that was in the vicinity, and a search was carried out on his person, where a “chopper” was found in his possession.
The prosecution said that Smith was taken to the Alberttown Police Station, placed on an identification parade, and was positively identified by Thom.
When the acting Chief Magistrate asked if he would like it if someone robbed his mother or sister, Smith told the magistrate that “people robbed them before”.
He was then sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment.
