Region 9 (Rupununi) were large and in charge of the 2008 Amerindian Heritage Month football competitions as the males retained their crown while the females recaptured the number one status and bragging rights when respective finals were contested on Sunday at the St. Ignatius Sports Club ground, Rupununi.
The female team arrested their counterparts from Region 7 and locked them out to claim back the crown they lost last year, 3-1 while the male team blasted their way to a 5-2 win over region 7.
Leading their charge to victory was Beverly Ambrose who netted a double as Region 7 could not find the right defensive combination to stave off the relentless offensive mounted by the Region 9 line up.
Complimenting Ambrose’ double was Kathleen Simon who put the game way beyond the opponent’s reach with her 52nd minute goal.
Region 7 was able to register a consolation goal off when Olivia Oselmo scored in the 71st minute. The most valuable player of the female competition was Vowsiema.
In the male version of the competition, region 9 again proved that they are way above the competition with yet another title.
Tournament MVP Samuel Harrinandan blasted a brace in leading the side to victory. But it was Region 7 who cantered into the lead in the 15th through a Vernon John effort signally their ambitious intentions.
It was however soon neturalised when Igar Younge drew region 9 level.
The champions soon after stamped their authority by imposing their will on their hapless opponents.
Harrinandan blasted in the second goal, the first of his double, five minutes after the equaliser, a blaster past goalkeeper, Terry Williams.
His second way found the back of the nets in the 56th minute and 5 minutes later their advantage was further increased when Lorinzo Sampson joined the scoring party.
Region 7 was able to tuck in another of their own in the 69th but if they had any hopes of mounting a comeback that was quickly erased when Kenny Benjamin nailed goal number five past Williams in the 75th minute.
For their efforts, the male champions were rewarded with $100,000 with the losers pocketing $75,000.
The female queens were rewarded with $75,000 for victory with the runner up taking home $45,000.
Dexter Mentore and Eleanor Winter both of region 9 were named the best male and female goalkeepers and each received $5,000.
