Better known for his exploits as a national footballer and coach, the former Queen’s College student also have other artistic talents, in this case, a passion for writing poems. Today, Kaieteur Sport takes pleasure in sharing one of Gordon ‘Ultimate Warrior’ Braithwaite’s pieces written in tribute to the World’s fastest athlete, Jamaican Usain Bolt.
A Tribute to Usain, the Colt who can ‘Bolt’
The entire world salutes you: All Hail TO Usain ‘Lightning’ Bolt
Whilst being at the tender age of 22 you are still only just a colt
Yet your performances in Beijing gave everyone a tremendous jolt
At these best-ever Olympics the whole world must give thanks for our luck
For seeing not once, nor twice but thrice when human lightning struck
Though you were in the ‘Bird’s Nest’ you, however, very definitely did fly
None of the other athletes could catch you regardless of whom it was that did try.
I saw you run the 200 meters race at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka
You won the silver medal yet it was quite obvious you could go even faster
Adding this to your history-making effort at age 15 certainly confirmed to me
That here was a very good young athlete with a distinguished pedigree
Who could truly go on to become one of the greatest ever in history.
Early in 2008 it was quite a surprise seeing you in a 100 meters race in the US
Crossing the finish line your youthfulness showed, for obviously you were in jest
However, you broke the world record running against the one who was the best
Yet your Coach later explained that that race had really been nothing but a test.
Words cannot express what your outstanding performances mean to your nation
Yet, Usain, you should not and must not be designated as just only a Jamaican
For you have undoubtedly raised the status of the entire Caribbean
Indeed great pride and admiration is being felt right across the region
In fact the Caricom Secretariat should give you some sort of commendation.
Whilst being a colt you ran like a thoroughbred and became a true Champion
What greater heights will you reach in 2012 when you will be a full stallion?
To perform at such a high level requires great commitment and total discipline
You are a positive role mode for Caribbean youths in these harsh times we live in
You emphatically showed them that with discipline success will be their gain
So may the ALMIGHTY CREATOR continue to bless and guide you, forever, Usain.
