Erva Giddings only Guyanese selected
The West Indies selectors have named a strong 14-member squad for a women’s cricket tour of Pakistan and Sri Lanka in October and November. The Captain is Nadine George, the experienced left-handed opener, who was also at the helm during the successful tour of Europe in June and July. The Vice Captain is Kirbyina Alexander, an experienced seamer who will spearhead the bowling attack.
The team includes three newcomers: allrounders Phernel Charles, Shanel Daley and Erva Giddings, who were among the leading players in the West Indies Cricket Board’s Women’s Tournament played in St Lucia in August. In Pakistan the Windies will play five One-Day Internationals and three 20/20 Internationals. They move to Sri Lanka for five One-Dayers.
Chairman of Selectors Clyde Butts said the game in the West Indies is on the rise and added that he is confident the players will do well and continue to show improvement.
“There is no doubt the talent is there and this is a unit that will get better. We have some very young players with good cricketing skills and I believe that we can challenge the rest of the world.”
This tour of Asia is a key part to the team’s preparation for the International Cricket Council’s Women’s World Cup 2009 to be played in Australia from March 7 to 22 in Sydney, Newcastle, Bowral and Canberra.
The 25-match tournament will feature the top eight teams in the world. The Windies have been drawn in Pool A alongside Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
The Windies are also slated to participate in the International Cricket Council’s Twenty20 World Championship in England in June 2009, which will feature eight teams and will be played alongside the men’s event.
Team to Pakistan and Sri Lanka: Nadine George (Captain), Kirbyina Alexander (Vice Captain), Merissa Aguilleira, Phernel Charles, Shanel Daley, Deandra Dottin, Afy Fletcher, Erva Giddings, Stacy-Ann King, Anisa Mohammed, Juliana Nero, Danielle Small, Charlene Taitt, Stefanie Taylor
