Forty-two year-old left-hander Orin Hutson rolled back the years with a shot-filled 102 while former Test off-spinner Clyde Butts weighted in with a rapid 51 as GNIC beat Transport Sports Club (TSC) by 33 runs yesterday at the GNIC ground in their Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Steve’ Jewellery 30 overs over-40 cricket competition.
Hutson, rated as one of the most astute captains in his younger days, entertained the small but vocal crowd with a stunning array of shots on the tiny ground and along with the 51-year-old Butts, shared in a century second wicket partnership as GNIC reached 201 all out in 25.4 overs.
Hutson, a former East Coast, Malteenoes and GNIC first-division all-rounder, blasted 10 sixes and five fours while Butts, a West Indies selector, counted three sixes and six fours in his innings as Clyde Monde picked up 3-34 for TSC who fell for 168 in 27 overs despite 72 with three sixes and seven fours from first division batsman Shawn Massiah.
Elton Jeffers, who retired hurt on 17 with a twisted ankle and Eon Daniels who made 16, were the only batsmen to offer token resistance after former Demerara leg-spinner Desmond Butts had Massiah neatly stumped by Clive Grimmond.
Desmond Butts finished with 2-33, Sageen Butts 2-34 and Tony Bourne 2-28 as GNIC achieved victory.
Meanwhile, Neil Barry lashed an unbeaten 48 with support from Winston Semple (32) and Maurice Julian (29) to lead Malteenoes Sports Club to a 3-wicket victory over the Rastafari Patriarchs in their Steve’s Jewellery over-40 match at Malteenoes Sports Club, Thomas lands yesterday.
Oswald Waldron and Winston Semple supported their batsmen’s efforts with bowling figures of 5 overs, no maidens, 3-29 and 4 overs, no maidens 2-20 respectively.
Rasta Patriarchs won the toss and elected to bat first. Their innings lasted just 24 overs. Neville Wiltshire (32) was the top scorer for the Patriarchs. He received support from Lloyd Smith 21, and Keith Braithwaite 15. Joseph Nicholls, 14 was the only other batsman to reach double figures.
Malteenoes conceded 10 runs off the first over that included 4 wides before Favourite went to a splendid catch by Julian Braithwaite at cover, 19-1.
Keith Braithwaite should have been back in the pavilion in the next over after he lashed ferociously at a ball and was halfway down the pitch when he realized that the bowler, Sherland Stephens had intercepted the ball.
Stephens had a throw at the stumps but failed to hit the target. The miss did not cost his team much as Braithwaite went the following over for fifteen, 47-2.
Skipper, Shawn Jacob managed to make just 7 before he was sent packing, 80-3. The other batsmen failed to make any significant contribution to the total.
Neil Barry (48) top scored for Malteenoes openers, with support from Maurice Julian and Winston Semple.
