Last week, Seema Narain, Branch Administration Officer, on behalf of that institution, handed over a $250,000 cheque to the representatives of the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce to assist in the construction of the facility.
During the simple ceremony, Ms. Narain described her company’s involvement in the project. “We recognize that this facility is a necessity in this area, and consider this to be a worthy donation. This is because, over the years, we have observed how many losses there were in lives and millions of dollars due to fire.”
The Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce has been the driving force behind this initiative since 2005.
President of the organization, Bhigroog Poonai, lauded the effort of the financial institution. “Heartfelt thanks to the Republic Bank. Their contribution would take us a far way.”
A number of other entities and individuals have contributed. The more recent ones include Dr. Vidanand Narain of Tain Settlement, who contributed $50,000, and former Mayor of New Amsterdam, Errol Alphonso, who donated two truckloads of sand.
Magistrate Krishendat Persaud gave $50,000; Gafoors gave $250,000 worth of windows, and Mohamed Rafik’s Construction Company gave doors and frames valued at $60,000. Mr. Poonai also expressed gratitude to the Kaieteur News paper, Dave’s Television Station and the Little Rock Television Station for their support.
A December time limit has been set for the completion of the fire station. The external aspect of the building is almost completed.
The Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce injected $2 million into the project.
Members of the organization continue to appeal to stakeholders and well wishers to contribute in making this venture a success.
