DEAR EDITOR,
I am a career public servant and a concerned prison officer. I wish to voice my dissatisfaction at the manner in which certain sectors of our society are using the situation of a prisoner’s death to gain mileage for their own personal agenda.
As an officer who applauds our transition to corrections, I am deeply saddened by the death of any prisoner who has been committed to our care, but I am more saddened by the manner in which our safety and well being are being ignored.
I must highlight that, while it is proper for an investigation to be launched to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the unexplained death of any citizen of our native land, I find it strange that there is no further investigation to establish to what extent persons were trying to breach our security.
Further, our national security is still at threat, but certain sectors of society seem to have turned a blind eye to this fact.
I am of the view that bringing live rounds into the prison is no mere coincidence, since it is human/prisoners’ nature to search the pockets of any piece of clothing that comes into their possession.
Thus, it is highly possible for there to be a weapon in our prison which would have accommodated the rounds found. Is this not a matter of great concern, since our national security is being threatened?
Have we forgotten 2002 and the level of terror that was bestowed upon our country? Or is it that the lives of prison officers have no value?
Well, if there is concern for our safety, then the primary focus should be the lives and safety of thousands, rather than one.
For those attending funerals and are biased in their comments, you make me remember the parable “whenever I do well they have cataract, but when I err they have 20/20 vision”.
I am certain that the majority do not have cataract, so please place priority where priority is needed, since our morale is low; and be reminded that only a prison officer can do the job of a prison officer.
My God, it is better to be a magistrate!
Concerned Prison Officer
