Acting President Samuel Hinds yesterday unveiled a ‘Peace Pole’ as Guyana joined some two hundred and sixteen countries in celebrating International Day of Peace.
The pole was unveiled at the site of the Non-Aligned Monument in the presence of Minister of Culture Youth and Sports, Dr. Frank Anthony, Mayor of Georgetown, Hamilton Green, and members of other peace groups.
This year’s International Day of Peace is being celebrated under the theme “Work to overcome barriers, build understanding, and promote reconciliation”.

Following the unveiling of the pole, acting President Samuel Hinds, Minister Anthony, Mayor Greene and dozens of other peace ambassadors marched along Main Street bearing placards advocating peace. The march ended at the Kingstown Seawall bandstand. Members of the Scouts Association also played a major part in yesterday’s march. Apart from the peace pole which was unveiled yesterday, another was recently unveiled at the Scout’s Association Headquarters, which is located in Woolford Avenue. Plans are underway for the erecting of more peace poles in other parts of the city and country.
The International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981 for “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace within and among all nations and people”.
Twenty years later, the General Assembly set September 21 as the date to observe the occasion annually as a “day of global ceasefire and non-violence… through education and public awareness, and to cooperate in the establishment of a global ceasefire”.
This year commemorates the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as the 60th anniversary of UN peacekeeping.
The Day offers an opportunity to spotlight the crucial relationship between peace and human rights, which are increasingly recognized as inseparable.
