West Indies under-19 Vice-Captain Steven Jacobs hit an attractive unbeaten 53 to spur Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) to an emphatic nine-wicket win against host Everest yesterday in their first round Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Pepsi first division 40-overs tournament.
The 20-year-old all-rounder warmed up for Friday’s opening round senior Inter County 50-overs cricket competition at Bourda by stroking a four and a six in his 75-ball innings and added 107 for the second wicket with Danny Narayan (59*) as MSC reached 141-1 off 33.5 overs replying to Everest’s 140-8 off their allotted 40 overs.
Jacobs joined forces with Narayan when Shemroy Barrington (24) was caught and bowled by former national under-19 left-arm spinner Sauid Drepaul at 54-1 and dominated the partnership with the right-handed Narayan whose innings was decorated with four fours and lasted 100 balls.
The former Guyana under-17 left-arm spinner opened the bowling and conceded just 25 runs from his eight overs but MSC were never really tested on a fast outfield and flat track and coasted to victory with 6.1 overs to spare to join GCC, DCC and GNIC with first round victories.
Everest won the toss in hot conditions and were in early trouble when Ryan Ramdass, who played his only Test match three years ago in Sri Lanka, flicked under-17 pacer Seon Daniels to square leg with the score on 19-1 in the ninth over.
Daniels, who should be an automatic pick in the Guyana under-17 20-man squad which is expected to be released this week, swung the new ball both ways as the batsmen were never allowed to score freely.
Former Guyana first-class opener Krishna Arjune, who made 29 from 59 balls, hit the first boundary of the innings in the 20th over when he lofted off-spinner Jacobs for six and although he added 49 for the second wicket with Drepaul, who made a 48-ball 30. Arjune missed a pull at left-arm spinner Damien Vantull and was leg before at 68-2 in the 22nd over, Everest were never able to accelerate the scoring.
Ex-Guyana under-19 leg-spinner Troy Gonsalves struck a six in 19 from 17 balls while Demerara wicketkeeper Joseph Perry scored 28 not out from 43 balls with intelligent batting and alert running between the wickets.
Vantull had 2-28 while the off-spin pair of Guyana 20/20 players Orin Forde (2-28) and Deon Ferrier (2-25) bowled well for the Thomas Lands unit.
