After a lull of several months, pirates appear to have resumed their activities on the Corentyne River, attacking a fishing vessel and leaving the five crew members to drift for hours before they were rescued.
Police in Berbice say that boat captain Roopnarine Sanichar, 51, and his four crew members, Lallman Sancharo, Peter Atamaram Singh, Navrindra Roopnarine and Patrick Nicholas, were relieved of a fishing boat valued at $2.5M, one Yamaha engine worth $780,000, and other articles by five men, one of whom was armed with a handgun.
The incident occurred last week. The fishing crew had left the Meadowbank Wharf on September 13 in a boat owned by Anil Narine of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara.
While in the Atlantic Ocean, in the vicinity of Whim, the men were pulling up their seine when the pirates approached in a small boat powered by a 40hp outboard engine.
The pirates ordered the fishermen at gunpoint into their boat. The pirates then took off their engine and placed it in the victims’ vessel, and made good their escape, leaving the fishermen drifting in the ocean.
The crew eventually drifted to the Bloomfield foreshore, after spending a night in the treacherous Atlantic. They then reported the matter to the police, who are carrying out investigations.
