ROSE HALL TOWN, CORENTYNE – Members of the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce offered 20-year-old Nicola Blades some hope when they handed her a $50,000 cheque last week. This is to assist in offsetting medical expenses.

The presentation was done at Rose Hall Town, on the Corentyne.
President of the Chamber, Bhigroog Poonai, said that everyone deserves a chance in life. “She is young and has a bright future ahead of her, and we hope that this donation can assist in correcting her medical condition, so that she can be back on her feet again.”
Sadeeka Hamid, daughter of the Chamber’s Vice-President Imran Hamid, did the handing over. She told Nicola Blades that the time is never right to give up the will to fight. “As long as there is a God and you continue to pray, He will help you. Try to continue your education.”
Nicola Blades, of Lot 31 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, suffered a sudden inability to walk in 2005; and three years later, she still cannot. She was extremely thankful to the Chamber for the donation.
There is sensory sensation in the lower limbs, but no motor activity.
The findings of an MRI in 2007 showed, after a T2W screening of the thoracic spine, that the posterior epidural at T4, T5 and T6 levels elevated the posterior ligament (ligamentum flavum) with possible collection/mass.
The document also suggested that there may be an in dural mass like meningioma. On May 8th this year, the Internal Medicine Department of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation presented the family with a medical report which states, inter alia, that Nicola is suffering from weakness of lower limbs.
According to the document, which was signed by Dr. R. Doobay MRCP (UK), Head of Internal Medicine, she was referred for surgical treatment overseas.
According to Nicola Blades and her mother, Claudette Blades, they are scheduled to meet with a specialist in Trinidad on October 7th.
