KILTEARN, CORENTYNE – Police in Berbice are investigating a robbery committed on a Corentyne family by armed bandits who relieved them of more than $500,000.
The incident occurred at about 20:10 hours on Saturday at Kiltearn, on the Corentyne.
According to reports, 38-year-old grocery shop owner Kumar Dalipchan and his wife, 33-year-old Chandrawattie Nandalall, were relieved of a quantity of jewellery and cash totalling $624,000, five cellular phones and a video camera, along with some telephone cards.
The family reportedly told police that four masked men entered the business place; one was armed with a hand gun and the others with cutlasses. The robbers held them at gun point, as they made their demands.
The cash and jewellery were said to be stashed in a drawer, while the camera was on a shelf.
The bandits fled on foot, and moments later the matter was reported to the Number Fifty-One Police Station.
Police responded, but there was no trace of the men.
