ROSE HALL TOWN, CORENTYNE – The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club successfully staged its first Career Day.
The activity was held on Friday in the compound of the J.C. Chandisingh Secondary School, at Rose Hall Town on the Corentyne. It attracted school children and teachers from as far as Corriverton and New Amsterdam.
A number of entities displayed information which assisted in enlightening the students of career options, subjects to pursue for selected careers, and what the actual job entailed. Reading material was distributed, and in some cases, there were demonstrations.
The activity was declared open by Region Six Education Officer Shafiran Bhajan. According to her, young persons are the assets which are expected to turn the wheels of tomorrow’s world. She told the gathering that, in choosing a career path, one must consider one’s interests, skills, passion and aptitude. She congratulated the organizers for putting together the event.
Among the 52 booth holders were the Guyana Fire Service, Commonwealth Youth Programme, Bakewell, UNICEF, Guyana Forestry Commission, Guyana Marketing Corporation, Guyana Revenue Authority, Guyana Information Agency, Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, St. Francis Community Developers, University of Guyana, Ministries of Health, Education and Culture, Human Services and Social Security, Youth and Sports, Metro, Guyana Water Inc., Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard and Air Corps, Geology and Mines Commission, Guyana Tourism Authority, Environmental Protection Agency, Institute of Private Enterprise Development, and Edward Beharry and Company.
Richard Parsram, of the Guyana Marketing Corporation, not only promoted the Grow More food campaign and distributed seeds, but was on the spot to explain the different careers in agriculture.
Chief Executive Officer of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, Hilbert Foster, explained that the main objectives were to educate and inform, and this was realized. “All of the agencies that participated were bombarded with questions relating to career choices, and the educational institutions that took part, like the New Amsterdam Technical Institute, the GuySuCo Training Centre, and the Upper Corentyne Technical Institute, as well as the School of the Nations, were all asked by the school children about what qualifications they needed to enter the facilities and about the courses offered.”
Mr. Foster said that the idea of hosting a career day came about as a result of the club’s concern about the number of young people in the Lower and Central Corentyne areas who are without jobs. “Many of them have several subjects and are still without jobs. Some of them are in school and are just going through the motion, and it is our hope that this Career Day would serve as an inspiration to them. There were numerous requests from schools for the event to become an annual one.”
The event attracted some 15,000 persons. Mr. Foster was thankful to the Department of Education, the administration of the J.C. Chandisingh High School, and other stakeholders for their participation.
