– last seen with ‘lady of the night’
Police are investigating the suspected murder of a man whose decomposing body was discovered last evening in a clump of bushes in the St. Phillips’ Green.
The body was discovered by a labourer who went to relieve himself in the secluded area.
Investigators believe that the man met his demise after going to the area with a ‘lady of the night’ sometime last week.
However, because of the decomposed state of the body, detectives were not able to ascertain the cause of his death, and are awaiting the results of a post mortem examination.
Paul Harry, a labourer who works at the Meadow Bank wharf, was passing through the St. Phillips Green at around 17:30 hours when he had an urgent call of nature.
He decided that the best place to relieve himself was in a secluded clump of bushes near the blind institute, where no one could see him.
He told this newspaper that, as he was going into the bushes, he first observed a cap and was greeted with a pungent smell.
“I tek it for some dead dog,” he told this newspaper.
But when he was finished and turned around to clean himself, he got the shock of his life.
“When I look around, I see a hand, and when I look good, I see is a man lie down. I didn’t get fuh see he face,” Harry explained.
He said that he immediately pulled up his pants and bolted from the area.
According to Harry, he made his way to the Ruimveldt Police Station to report what he had seen, but was chased away by a rank there.
“He tell me don’t come near before I smell he up,” Harry told this newspaper.
He then told a rank of the City Constabulary at the La Penitence Market about his discovery, and was sent to this newspaper’s office on Saffon Street.
Accompanied by a senior reporter, he returned to the scene, where the discovery was confirmed.
The police at Brickdam were alerted, and responded promptly.
At the scene, a ‘lady of the night’ related that she had seen a man fitting the description of the victim entering the area late on Thursday night.
“Dem men does pick fare with them girls in hey. Dem girls does bring dem, and sometimes, if dey drunk, dey does rob dem,” the woman said.
When she was eventually allowed to see the dead man, she held her face and turned away in apparent shock.
She, however, declined to give further details.
The body was taken away by undertakers from the Lyken Funeral Parlour to await a post mortem examination.
