It was a night of breathtaking hockey that produced two of the finest goals scored in recent memory, but at the end of it all only one team could have carried home the coveted prize and it was Old Fort ‘A’.
Board official Rawl Davson (right) presents GCC Spartans Captain Alysa Xavier with the Second Division top hardware in the presence of her team-mates last Friday evening.
Starting with a 5-4 handicap, Old Fort ‘A’ were pushed all the way, before prevailing 7-6 in sudden death overtime through a superb strike from John Abrams three minutes into the second overtime to grab the Men’s title as the Noble House Seafoods Handicap Indoor Hockey Tournament climaxed last Friday night, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Also, in winners’ row were GCC Spartans who captured the Second Division title, scraping a narrow win against Hikers Ladies by an 8-7 margin after benefiting from a 6-4 handicap.
In the feature clash between Old Fort ‘A’ and GCC ‘A’, it was always anticipated that the encounter would have been a gripping affair and so it was as the two teams produced one of the most fascinating performances in the competition as they slugged it out toe to toe.
Old Fort were the first to score when ‘libero’ Aderemi Simon dribbled two defenders with consummate ease, before slipping a pass to his brother Askofu, who slammed a ripper past the advancing Gregory Garraway stationed between the uprights.
That gave them a 6-4 lead after 16 minutes of play.
It remained that way at the break, but on the resumption GCC squandered an excellent opportunity to pull one back when Orland Semple’s stinging effort was deflected just wide of the upright by the agile Tony Cole.
However, with GCC mounting several raids through the services of the experienced Alan Fernandes and Damon Woodroffe and to some extent Chris Xavier and it was a pinpoint accurate pass from the latter that Devin Hooper reached on to and slapped it past Cole, who stood no chance. That made it 6-5 in favour of Old Fort.
Each team missed excellent chances of scoring, first Abrams squirted wide from close range then Fernandes just missed the right upright.
Semple then netted the goal of the match just on the stroke of full time when he executed an exquisite slice into the roof of the net off a long pass from the back, giving Cole no chance of saving to set up sudden death overtime.
The first five minutes failed to produce a winner even though both teams missed opportunities, forcing a second five minutes segment.
It was then Abrams sealed victory for his team with a screaming shot that rocked into the back of the net that left Garraway and his team-mates momentarily stunned.
In the Second Division final, the Spartans, who started with a 6-4 handicap managed to hold off their more experienced opponents to claim the title.
Marzena Fiedtkou and Brianna Gordon were the players on target for the winners, while nationals Amanda Garnette with a brace and Avonda James, a single responded for the losers.
In other results: GCC Tigers (+4) beat Degenerates (+1) 8-7. For the Tigers, Sonia Jardine netted a double, while there was one apiece for Vanessa Pires and Shebiki Baptiste. Sheldon Corlette and Ivor Thompson each scored a pair and there was one each for Timothy Jonas and Tristan Gomes.
Hikers ‘B’ (+3) defeated Western Dragons (0) 6-2. Triston Tuckersingh, Ryan Primo and Travis McKenzie were the goal-scorers for Hikers ‘B’, while Leroy Carroll and Andy Sampson responded for Dragons.
Hikers ‘A’ (+2) then slaughtered Shakatan (+6) 14-9. Robert France and Alex Gouveia each scored four goals, while Shane Samuels with a double and Randy Hope and Devin Munroe one apiece added admirable support. Shaka Gill, a double and Zach Gonsalves were the men on target for Shakatan.
Meanwhile, play in the Banks DIH Open Outdoor Tournament starts tomorrow night, at the Thirst Park ground.
