A 76-year-old man almost lost sight in his right eye after his face was ripped open by a power saw, of which he somehow lost control while cutting wood at his home, which is under renovation.
As a result of the accident, Samuel George, of the Ituni District, required over thirty stitches to close the gaping wound, which bared the bone in some areas.
Speaking from his bed at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), George related that, at around 17:00 hrs on Thursday, he was involved in renovation work to his home, in the company of another man, when the incident occurred.
He said that he had just concluded cutting a roof beam, and was about to sever another with the saw when the blade connected with another wooden plank above his head and was ripped from his hand.
He said the saw somersaulted into the air before plummeting downwards.
The spinning blade made an excruciating impact with the right side of his face.
He said that he instinctively squinted his eyes as the blade tore the flesh on his face, but not before it severed both lids on the right eye, barely missing the cornea and iris by a fraction of an inch.
George said relatives rushed him to the Ituni Hospital, where the wound was cleaned and the bleeding stanched, before he was transferred to the Wismar Hospital.
The badly injured man was transferred some hours later to the GPHC, as a result of his injuries, and was immediately admitted to the institution.
