Former Guyana under-15 player Ravi Sarwan celebrated his debut selection for the Demerara senior team with a fluent unbeaten century, while West Indies ODI left-hander Leon Johnson scored 61 as GCC beat the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) by 155 runs at Bourda on Saturday in the opening round of the Pepsi first division 40 overs cricket competition for teams in Georgetown.
The 23-year-old Sarwan, the younger brother of West Indies Vice-Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, stroked four fours in his 91-ball undefeated 104 (his 2nd ton at this level) and added 150 for the third wicket with the 21-year-old Johnson who scored a half-century in three ODI matches in Canada last month as they joined forces with GCC on 32-2.
Johnson hit three fours and a six in his 78-ball innings while former Guyana under-19 left-hander Vishal Singh, who has not been selected for Demerara for the El Dorado Inter-County series which starts on Friday, hit a cameo 36 from 13 balls with five fours and a six as GCC rattled up 276-6 off their allotted 40 overs.
Paul Castello, who removed former Guyana first-class player Azeemul Haniff (1) and Johnson, took 2-44 from four overs for GDF who reached 121-9 when their overs expired on the fast outfield.
Thirty-six year-old former First-Class medium pacer Roderick Lovell returned to first division cricket with an unbeaten 57 with three fours and a six but no other batsman offered support for the soldiers as ex-Guyana youth seamer Trevor Henry (3-18), Johnson (2-10) and Gavin Singh (2-18) were the main wicket takers for the hosts.
At DCC, Guyana Stanford 20/20 player Chris Barnwell continued his rich vein of form with a robust 38-ball 55 with seven fours and two sixes as DCC crushed Police by 124 runs.
Twenty-five-year-old National wicketkeeper shrugged off his disappointment of again being overlooked by the Demerara selectors to hit 25 while former Guyana under-19 right-hander Deonauth Baksh made 24 as DCC fell for 203 in 35.2 overs.
Off-spinner Nigel Denny grabbed 5-35 on debut while Vishal Jaigobin supported with 2-35 for the Cops who capitulated to 79 all out in 20.4 overs as only Rawle Browne (27) and Jaigobin (13) reached double figures.
Barnwell, off-spinner Denis Squires and leg-spinner Kester Harcourt took two wickets each for the winners.
In the other first round match played on Saturday, GNIC, led by a useful all-round performance from Mark Montfort, beat Transport Sports Club (TSC) by 38 runs at Everest.
Montfort hit six fours in 59 and got support from Demerara under-17 opener Quincy Ovid-Richardson who continued his recent good form with 47 and Shawn De Souza (46) as off-spinner Kevin Ross took 3-34.
Kellon Carmichael, a 2007 Guyana under-19 all-rounder, also celebrated his maiden senior Demerara call-up with 2-43 while leg-spinner Travis Blyden had 2-33 for TSC who were dismissed for 162 in 36. 4 overs despite 46 from Carmichael and 32 with three mighty sixes from National 20/20 wicketkeeper Tyrell Tull who returns to first division cricket for his new club.
Montfort had 3-32 while 51-year-old West Indies selector and former Test off-spinner Clyde Butts, his son and fellow off-spinner Collis Butts and Garfield Newton supported with two wickets each.
Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) and Everest clash in the other first round game on Sunday at Everest.
