Laps entire field to underline number 1 status
By Franklin Wilson
He is certainly still the man to beat on the circuit and streets in Guyana. National cycling king and Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club rider Alonzo Greaves yesterday underlined his dominance over his rivals with another scintillating performance in the feature 35-lap race at the 6th annual Laparkan sponsored 11-race cycle programme held at the Inner Circuit of the National Park.
The 19-year-old Greaves destroyed his rivals to win the race in one hour 23 minutes 35.71 seconds, crossing the line ahead of second placed Tyrone Hamilton who completed the distance in one hour 25 minutes 10.96 seconds.
Christopher Persaud was third followed by Daniel Ramchurejee, Phillip Piggott and veteran Virgil Jones to close out the top six.
The race started with 21 riders and saw Hamilton and Ramchurejee breaking away from the pack by the end of the first lap. Greaves and Persaud decided to ease out of the pack by the third lap with Hamilton and Ramchurejee still out front but they connected with the leaders on lap 7.
Christopher Holder, who placed second to Greaves in the DeSinco / Milkaut feature one week ago suffered some mechanical problems and was forced out of contention on lap 6.
The leading quartet, were able to establish themselves as the race progressed in sweltering heat. By lap17 and 18, the entire field was lapped by the four leaders.
Greaves who’s fitness continues to place him head and shoulders above the competition, dug deeper into the fuel tank to pull away from his colleagues on lap 22 establishing a sizable lead as he finished the contest all alone.
Hamilton, who has not been at his best in the last couple of months, came out blazing yesterday to out sprint Persaud and Ramchurejee for the number two spot.
Greaves took five of the eight sprint prizes, Hamilton two with the other taken by Ramchurejee.
Jason Pollydore, younger brother of former national sensation Godfrey Pollydore, continues to do well with victories in the juvenile and 12-14 boys event.
Jonathan Fagundes was runner up in the juvenile race with Jamal Cromwell placing similarly in the 12-14. Female Naiomi Singh was third in both.
Kester Croal was again unstoppable in the upright battle ahead of Dennis Charles and Kevon Watters.
Jones topped the field in the veterans under-50 clash, Kennard Lovell settling for the runner up spot ahead of Bochel Samaroo while Aubrey Gravesande was again better than his over-50 counterparts, Courtney Thomas and Lloyd Williams, second and third.
