Following the attack at the Wismar Hospital during which a nurse was brutally raped, the government has finally heeded the calls of the hospital administration in providing additional security at the facility.
Speaking to Kaieteur News on the issue yesterday, Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran said that the situation has finally been effectively addressed and the Wismar Hospital is once again operating on a normal and regular basis.
Following some media reports that the nurses of the hospital were involved in a strike action on Thursday, Ramsarran said that he was not aware that the medical personnel were striking, but rather he was informed that they were involved in a ‘solidarity’ march for their fellow colleagues who were attacked.
He noted that the nurses indeed had some concerns as it relates to their working conditions at the hospital following the robbery, but those concerns have since been addressed and the nurses are now fully back on duty.
Dr. Ramsaran explained that the security arrangement has been extensively improved at the Wismar Hospital, along with the one at Linden.
According to the Minister, there are constant police patrols traversing the streets, while armed guards are already stationed at both hospitals.
As it relates to the transportation aspect, he explained that nurses will be taken home when they work late. It was also noted that a new ambulance has been placed at the hospital, as it was found that the medical institution was in dire need of one.
Approximately one week ago bandits stormed the Wismar Hospital Complex at Blue Berry Hill, where they attacked and robbed two nurses of their jewellery, cell phones, a watch and a portable DVD player. During the robbery, one of the nurses was brutally raped, while her colleague was made to watch.
Reports indicate that the two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, confronted the two nurses who were on duty at the time in the casualty ward of the hospital, where they robbed them and then made good their escape.
Following the incident, the hospital was deserted, as no staff member reported for duty the following day.
Currently two men are before the court, charged with the offences.
