The more I think of it, the more I am convinced. You too my readers should give it some thought and see whether you do not arrive at the same conclusion.
After careful thought over an extended period of time, I have come to the inescapable conclusion that Uncle Freddie and President Bharrat Jagdeo are very much alike. They are like two peas in a pod.
The fact that Uncle Freddie is obviously not impressed by the President’s record or leadership skills should not detract from the similarities in style and substance between the two.
The fact that the President is reported in the media to have made unflattering references to the professor should not take away from the parallels in personalities between himself and Uncle Freddie.
I once knew an individual who used to quarrel with another all the time. You would believe they were sworn enemies.
Yet, one day when one of them got sick, the first person to go and visit was the other. Sometimes persons who seem constantly at odds with each other have a common bond; they share a friendship that goes beyond their differences.
It was said that despite their clear differences, despite their protracted and often bitter political rivalry, there was something between Cheddi and Forbes. Cheddi always had a soft spot for Forbes and Forbes despite being ruthless with all his enemies never harmed Cheddi.
I also believe that Bharrat and Uncle Freddie have a soft spot for each other. I believe that despite whatever Uncle Freddie may say about Bharrat, he really likes him. Why do I say this?
If a mad man sees you on the road and calls you a fool, you would not pay too much attention to him. You would just brush off the insult because it has come from someone who does not mean much to you.
However if someone close to you, someone whom you have the greatest regard for were to describe you as a fool, it would hurt you to the bone.
You would be upset, and if you would, possibly rant and rave that someone so dear to you could say such an unkind thing.
This is why I believe that Uncle Freddie deep in his heart has a soft spot for the PPP and President Jagdeo. I feel deep within him, he feels a close affinity to the PPP and President Jagdeo, and this is why he is so hurt by what they did to him.
If the same thing was done to him by any other government, he would not have been as upset, but to think that he has been slighted by a government which comprises persons who at one time were considered his friends, this must have wounded him terribly.
I also believe that someone like President Jagdeo must have been aware of the heroic role that Uncle Freddie played in the restoration of democracy in Guyana.
He must have in the past hailed Uncle Freddie’s exploits in the political realm and as a fearless columnist. And he too must be deeply disappointed at the position that Uncle Freddie is taking these days.
Both men have reason to be disappointed too at the distance between them. I believe that if you study closely the personalities of both men and how they react to situations, you would find a striking similarity.
I do not know if it has to do with their respective upbringing even though they both come from different backgrounds – Uncle Freddie’s childhood was spent in the city while Bharrat grew up in the countryside.
I do not know if it has to do with the fact that they both sprang from humble beginnings but each seized the opportunities presented in life to distinguish themselves academically.
I do not know if it has to do with the fact that both Uncle Freddie and Bharrat despite the opportunities that were open to them outside of politics, chose to engage themselves politically, Bharrat solely in the PPP and Freddie in the PPP also and later in the Working People’s Alliance.
Both men also were at one time or the other teachers, and I do not know if the similarities in their personalities developed because of this.
These are things that those with a greater competence in social psychology will have to pronounce on. What I am sure about is that the more I study these two individuals, the more I am convinced that they have a great deal in common.
Perhaps one day President Bharrat will look in the mirror and he will see an image of Uncle Freddie staring back and perhaps one day Uncle Freddie will do the same. If these men are so similar then they should have a mutual respect for one another.
After all, if the two cannot enjoy a good relationship when they have such likeness in personalities, what would happen had they been different?
