The rehabilitation of several roads, bridges and schools have either been completed or are nearing completion in various communities in Region Three, as part of the Regional Democratic plans outlined for this year.
According to Regional Chairman Julius Faerber, some of the works were allotted funding under a $30M infrastructural improvement strategy, which was engaged prior to Carifesta X.
Faerber, in an interview with this newspaper yesterday, disclosed that most of the works have been completed to a satisfactory extent and, as such, the region is directing its attention to its capital programme, which is about 55 per cent completed.
He disclosed that, at the moment, rehabilitative works at schools, such as the Goed Fortuin and La Grange Primaries on the West Bank of Demerara, have been completed, as are works on the Zeelugt Primary, on the East Bank of Essequibo, where extensive maintenance was undertaken.
He noted that, in the area of infrastructure, there are about four roads yet to be completed. These roads are located in the Patentia West, Sisters, and Leguan areas.
Among the finished infrastructural works is a concrete bridge that has replaced a wooden structure at Crane, West Coast Demerara.
This bridge is intended to be utilised by the residents of the Crane Housing Scheme and the Crane New Scheme. According to the Chairman, the bridge was constructed at a cost of $3.8M.
He noted that the move to replace the wooden bridge with a concrete one was based on a decision by the regional administration to ensure that constant repairs will become a thing of the past.
And even though the Chairman remains adamant that the region is not responsible for the maintenance of the Crane Old Road, the region has, nevertheless, helped with levelling the surface of the pot-holed road with crusher run.
However, it was noted that the roads at Crane and Best Villages, West Coast Demerara, as well as that of Coglan Dam on the West Bank of Demerara, will be restored under an Inter-American Development Bank project, which is intended to facilitate developmental works in secondary townships.
Others works that were undertaken by the region included a bridge at Vriesland, West Bank Demerara, which was constructed at a cost of $3.2M, and another bridge at Wakenaam, valued at $2.1M.
At a cost of more than $5M, roads at 662 Reserved, at Parika, East Bank Essequibo, and another called Zameed Street at Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, have so far been completed, Faerber revealed.
Faerber also disclosed that Back Street, Stewartville, has also been restored at a cost of $6.7 M, while First Street, Block 20, Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, was completed at a cost of $4.9 M.
