Some six tonnes of sugar were lost on Thursday when a contracted truck attached to the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) overturned on the Goed Fortuin Public Road.
Speaking with Kaieteur News yesterday, Chief Executive Officer of GuySuCo, Nick Jackson, said that the contracted company will be responsible for the cost of the lost sugar.
According to Jackson, the sugar that was being transported by GEE 9894, was worth $720,000. This loss, he said, will not affect the company in any way.
On Thursday, the truck overturned at Goed Fortuin, after reportedly experiencing some technical difficulties.
According to the driver of the truck, he was driving along the Goed Fortuin Public Road, in the direction of the Demerara Harbour Bridge, when the truck suddenly began to lose acceleration.
He said that he instinctively pulled over to avoid blocking traffic but the truck toppled and ended in a yard.
The sugar which was being transported spilt out, prompting residents to begin gathering to collect what they could in various types of containers.
In an effort to save the contents, the owner of the truck, Ronald Sammy, fired several shots in the air to clear the crowd, to no avail.
