Elwin Chase (with ball) attempts to split the defence of Ryan George (left) and Troy Arjoon yesterday.
National Rugby Coach Sherlock Solomon told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the squad is rounding into peak fitness and all that is missing now is his overseas-based players.
The team which continued practice sessions at the National Park is preparing for the upcoming NAWIRA Sevens Championships slated for the Bahamas from October 25-26.
Solomon, who is being assisted by Clinton Clarke, was seen taking the team through a number of ball handling and tackling drills which according to him are both integral in the shorter version of the game.
According to the Coach, the overseas-based players are expected in the country at month’s end, but lamented the fact that their late arrival has forced him to delay naming the final squad.
Those based overseas are: Richard Staglon, Claudius Butts, Theodore Henry, Ronald Mayers, Kevin McKenzie and Rupert Giles.
Solomon added that they are still awaiting word on whether McKenzie, who plays in Ireland and Giles, who lives in England will be able to attend the tournament.
It was also disclosed that another Guyanese Mark Webster from the USA has informed the Guyana Rugby Football Union that he is interested in returning to represent Guyana during the competition.
The local-based players are: Peobo Hamilton, Elwin Chase, Jason Tyrell, Algernon Felix, Dwayne Schroeder, Ryan George, Cloyd Prowell, Clyde Montouth, Dane Parks, Satesh Samaroo, Troy Arjoon, Christopher Singh, Leon Greaves, Troy Bascom and Albert LaRose. Guyana is the defending Sevens champions.
