Former West Indies leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo and former first-class batsman Hoomchand Pooran have been named in a Berbice 21-man training squad to prepare for the ElDorado senior Inter-county 50-overs cricket competition which begins next Saturday.
Nagamoootoo, who turns 33 next month, played five Tests for the West Indies between 2000 and 2004 and holds the record for most wickets (318) in regional first class-cricket.
His 370 wickets from 102 First-Class matches makes him the leading Guyana bowler presently playing although he was not selected for Guyana during this year’s regional first-class season.
The 29-year-old Pooran played the last of his 10 first-class matches for Guyana five years ago and is still regarded as one of the most reliable batsmen at the Inter-County level.
The 27-year-old Sewnarine Chattergoon, who played the first of his two Tests this year against Sri Lanka in Trinidad joined Nagamootoo and Narsingh Deonarine as the players with Test experience in the squad.
Pooran, Assad Fudadin, Veerasammy Permaul, Richard Ramdeen and Gajanand Singh are the players in the side, apart from Chattergoon, Nagamootoo and Deonarine who have played for the West Indies at under-19 level.
The squad also includes belligerent Guyana under-19 batsman Jonathan Foo and 16-year-old under-17 pacer Keon Joseph and will assemble at the Rose Hall Canjie ground from 12:30hrs on Monday for their first practice session.
The Berbice team will be managed by David Black and coached by former first-class batsman Hubern Evans, the coach of the Guyana under-19 team.
The full squad read:-Brandon Bess, Davendra Bishoo, Anthony Bramble, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Devon Clements, Esuan Crandon, Narsingh Deonarine, Jonathan Foo, Assad Fudadin, Delbert Hicks, Keon Joseph, Ranga Lachigadoo, Kwesi Maltay, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Royston Crandon, Michael Newland, Veerasammy Permaul, Homchand Pooran, Richard Ramdeen, Gajanand Singh, Paul Wintz.
