A fisherman who was questioned about the Bartica slaughter says he fears for his safety after being warned that he would be murdered “before Christmas”.
Marice Teixeira, who says he is a member of the Greater Georgetown Fisherman’s Co-op Society, told Kaieteur News that he was informed about the plan on his life last Saturday and has since contacted a prominent attorney.
Teixeira revealed that he was detained at Eve Leary shortly after the February massacre, after being accused of being the speedboat operator who took the gunmen to Bartica.
The fisherman said he was eventually released after being placed on an identification parade.
Teixeira insists that he has never travelled to Bartica.
He also denied ever transporting Rondell Rawlins, called ‘Fine Man’, who was slain a few weeks ago.
But Teixeira revealed that he was charged for murder and armed robbery in 1997, following a bank heist at Anna Regina, Essequibo, in which a policeman was slain.
He was eventually freed after spending 48 months as a remand prisoner.
The bullet-riddled and battered body of Patrick Gunraj, another accused in the bank heist, was subsequently found in Thomas Lands, and Teixeira expressed concern that he, too, may suffer the same fate.
The fisherman said that police ranks from Eve Leary came to his home a few days after the slaughter of 12 people at Bartica and informed him that he was wanted for questioning.
Teixeira was taken to Eve Leary where the ranks alleged that an eyewitness had identified him as the boat operator who had taken the gunmen to Bartica.
He was placed on an identification parade and the alleged eyewitness informed the ranks that Teixeira was not the boatman.
Nevertheless, the fisherman said he was detained at the Brickdam Police Station and was only released after someone requested that he be placed on $25,000 station bail.
But the troubles weren’t over, Teixeira said. “After East La Penitence Police Station get shoot up, they lock me up again,” he related. He was eventually released on $10,000 station bail.
Teixeira revealed that “out of curiosity” he accompanied a friend to the Lyken Funeral Parlour to view Rawlins’ body on the day the slain gunman was buried.
He said that last Saturday, a friend warned him that he should “bail out the country”, since the friend had received information that Teixeira would be killed before year-end.
The fisherman said that he has since contacted an attorney, but remains concerned about his safety.
