Thirty-six year-old Wesley Carlos Payne, called ‘Piggy’, was remanded to prison yesterday for allegedly raping a nurse and a female security guard, and a magistrate jailed him for nine years on four charges of armed robbery.
Payne, aged 36, of Lot 17 Section ‘C’, Christianburg, appeared in the Christianburg Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan on two charges of having carnal knowledge of a female.
It is alleged that on Wednesday September 11, Payne had carnal knowledge of a nurse, at the Wismar Hospital.
He was also charged with committing the same offence on a security guard, on the 27th August, 2008, at Burnham Drive.
He was remanded to prison until October 22.
Two nurses were held at gunpoint and robbed at around 01:30 hrs on Thursday by two men who invaded the hospital compound. One of the victims was raped.
Payne who along with accomplice George Yearwood was also charged with robbery under arms, committed the offence on the two nurses at the Wismar Hospital on September 11.
It is alleged that the duo robbed the nurses of a quantity of items, which amounted to $19,700 and $35,500.
Payne pleaded guilty to both matters, and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment on each count.
The sentences will run concurrently.
However, his alleged accomplice, George Yearwood, pleaded not guilty, and was remanded to prison until October 22.
Payne was also charged with robbery under arms, committed on Indira Russell, on September 12 at Buck Town Road.
The woman was reportedly relieved of three Motorola mobile phones valued at $49,500 and a wrist watch valued $1,500.
It is alleged that Russell was at home when Payne asked her for a drink of water.
However, when Russell sent her daughter for the water, Payne allegedly held the mother at gunpoint, dragged her into her home, and relieved her of the items.
He allegedly then robbed Keino Baird of a bunch of green bananas valued $5,000 and a mountain bike valued $14,000, property of Compton De Abreu.
The accused pleaded guilty to both charges and was sentenced to three years imprisonment on each charge. The sentences will run consecutively.
The attack at the Wismar Hospital triggered several days of protest in the mining community, with nurses demanding tighter security at the institution.
At the time of the attack, unarmed female security staffers were the only security personnel at the hospital.
Health officials promised that security at the institution would be improved.
The nurses have also asked for special protection while heading home after night duty.
