Police seize security service’s firearms

Police in Berbice have seized two firearms registered to the COPS Security Service after it was learnt that the operatives in whose possession they were found were not trained in the use of the weapons.

The weapons, two Taurus revolvers, with matching rounds, were seized at two different sites manned by the security service.

According to reports, at about 15:00 hours on Monday, the police acting upon information went to the Gafoor Store at Rose Hall, Berbice where they confronted a 55-year-old security guard. At the time, the guard was armed with a .32 Taurus revolver.

When questioned he claimed that he was never trained to use a firearm and produced a duplicate copy of a licence, which indicated that the weapon belongs to COPS Security Service. The weapon was taken away and subsequently lodged at the Whim Police Station.

And later the said day, the police seized another .32 Taurus revolver and six matching rounds from another security guard at the Berbice River Bridge site at Rosignol, West Coast Berbice.

Kaieteur News understands that this time, at about 17:45 hours, the police confronted a 54-year-old guard who was also armed with a gun.

He too said that he was not trained to use the weapon. His weapon was lodged at the Fort Wellington Police Station. Investigations are continuing.
